Safe Portable Generator Operation
Winter finally found us and this weekend is to be brutally cold. In case of power outages the following is a reminder as to the safe operation of portable generators. Stay warm!
If you are operating a portable generator please be aware of the hazards associated with their operation. Please be reminded of the following:
Never use a generator indoors or in enclosed spaces such as garages, crawl spaces, or basements.
Make sure your generator has 3 to 4 feet of clear space on all sides and above it to ensure adequate ventilation.
Do not use a generator outdoors if it’s placed near doors, windows, and vents as carbon monoxide (CO) could be allowed to enter occupied spaces.
If you show symptoms of CO poisoning–dizziness, headaches, nausea, tiredness–get to fresh air immediately and seek medical attention.
Shocks and electrocution from improper use of power or accidentally energizing other electrical systems are potential hazards– along with fires from improperly refueling a generator.
